Following the crowd means getting lost in it. We blaze our own trail, bucking convention in favor of finding a better way.
Our Lake County mountain vineyard estate is situated at an altitude of 2,200 feet above sea level in the mountains of the North Coast of California. This rugged terrain is characterized by ancient volcanic soils, steep elevation and more recently warmer summers and cooler winters. This demanding environment creates the perfect conditions to produce wines with exceptional character.
We grow incredible mountain fruit at a great value for our customers and we’re passionate about preserving the land.
Project Ovis is the transformation of our 1,000-acre Lake County California mountain vineyard estate into a completely sustainable, regenerative organic farming system. It is our reimagining of viticulture and winemaking to address the effects of climate change. Our efforts are both holistic and dynamic, combining carbon sequestering practices with permaculture initiatives and energy efficiency applications. We are pioneering change and setting industry standards in an ongoing effort to improve the way we treat the planet and its swiftly dwindling resources.

There are #wines for restrained, erudite conversations, and then there are wines for rollicking good times. Buck Shack is the latter.
Nestled deep in the @ShannonFamilyOfWines #vineyards stood a dilapidated 100-year-old skinning shed called “Ye Old Buck Shack.” We loved its rugged beauty and the history of this old building, so we restored it.
Inspired by everything the #BuckShack represented, we created a #wine that captured the authenticity and wildness of Lake County—wines that go hand-in-hand with good times and bad judgment.

Bees aren't needed to fertilize grapevines, which are usually propagated from cuttings. Nonetheless, bees are crucial to the annual harvest on the Shannon vineyards. Why?
Because the agricultural health of our property depends on these beneficial insects. They are the primary pollinators for numerous plants up and down the vineyard, helping to keep nitrogen levels in balance.
The presence of bees is a sign that we've got a thriving ecosystem. Next time you toast a glass of vino—from our family of wines, of course—give thanks to these busy workers.

Good Times Santa Cruz is raving about the unique flavor of our Buck Shack Bourbon Barrel Cab.
“Yes, folks, there’s a touch of bourbon in every swig; this bold and rustic red is aged in old bourbon barrels. You just have to try it for yourselves to experience all of the nuances of a good wine—with a tad of Kentucky’s pride and joy”
Good times, indeed. Thanks for the shoutout, @GoodTimesSC!

Did you know that Shannon Family Wine vineyards are 100% certified sustainable? As of July 2022, we will be among the largest certified organic, mountain-grown vineyards in the USA.
One of our biggest challenges since going organic has been controlling leafhoppers, which can decimate a vineyard. To combat this menace, we’ve been experimenting with natural insect control by releasing lacewings (pictured), a beneficial insect with a taste for leafhopper—nom nom!
